Channel 4 - For The Love of Cars

For the Love of Cars - Series 2 Episode 5 features the restoration of a Saab 96 and subsequent auction at the NEC Birmigham.   Chairman, John Wilkins recognised the registration number HDF 918L as a car he supplied from new to a customer in Prestbury on 21st July 1973.  It brought back so many happy memories of the Saab franchise and the very successful Saab 96 V4.  He was pleased to see the car restored to its original colour "Amber".  The Directors found the vehicle details still on file in their archives with the chassis number: 96-732-017475.  Commenting, John Wilkins said "to this day we have a badge to fit the car on our memorabilia board on display in the showroom".   The company successfully sponsored a Saab 96 in the RAC Rally coming a respectable 13th in 1974.  His late son Bobby was a team technician working all hours on the various stages to keep the car competitve.  Driver, Ian McCaine broke the front suspension on a stage in Scotland which was quickly repaired by Bob from the pool of spare parts to get him on his way to finish.  The brake discs became so hot that they were glowing red in the dark.
